Aorta Photographs
A long, dark and dreary corridor is connecting a loft-house in a back yard
to a street in the city of Brussels, Belgium. This vital “tunnel” connecting the private sphere
to the busy town made me think of a big vein, an aorta. Then, the colour red simply suggested
itself.
I painted everything in matte red... The walls, the ceiling, doors and windows,
fuse-, phone- and letter- boxes...The floor, in the close future, will be red as well.
To stride the 25 metre long passageway, one needs around 50 seconds - enough time to live and
feel emotions. I thought it would be interesting to let something happen along the left wall
which catches the most glints and light. I wanted to play “tone on tone” between the shiny and
matte aspects of the same pigment. I proposed several designs to Isabelle Pauthier and Patrick
Mayot - the happy owners - and we finally chose some long shiny stripes falling from the ceiling
to the floor emphasizing the organic side of the set.
